The Left Wing Man
By SMSA Sport's Journalist: Carlos Sanchez
Win Oo plays left wing on defense for Sport and Medical Sciences Academy Boys Soccer. Oo had 3 goals last season, even though his team had a rough time with a record of 3-17. He is a team player that loves to get his team involved in every game they play. Oo is from Thailand, where soccer is a major sport; it’s really the only sport that they are accustomed to. People of Thailand can play all day long; never getting tired of the sport that they love. “I chose to play this sport because in my country of Thailand, we only really play soccer all our lives” he responds.
Oo is coming off of a season that he would rather not remember, even though he did score a good amount of goals last year. He states, “My biggest challenge is actually playing against different players with different skills, but I overcome that by communicating with my team on the field and working with them”. SMSA Tigers have always had a tough time making it to the state competition for Boys Soccer, but they have tried constantly. Their head coach Erik McKay has never given up on his team, and always makes sure that they don’t just play the game, but also have fun with it. Oo is a motivator for his team, but what motivates him? He states, “I constantly practice my shot and keep exercising to keep myself in shape, I try to build up my stamina". Stamina is a huge part of soccer, because you are constantly running up and down the field. Being healthy is something huge in sports, and Oo knows exactly what to do when it comes to staying healthy.
As a senior, Oo is trying to make a statement this year, knowing this is his last year on a high school soccer team. "I plan on scoring more goals and trying to go out with a winning record for my last year". Senior year isn't just important for sports, it's also important for college and also a huge project called Capstone. There is a lot to worry about senior year, and being a student athlete is even harder because you have to maintain both school and sports. Oo was asked his opinion on this topic, and he responded by saying, "It's very hard, due to the fact that sometimes I am tired after practice. So when I get home it's really late and I have to stay up to finish my homework". Oo is a great student when it comes down to both his school work and sports.
Oo is a role model to many people in his neighborhood, "I always tell the young kids to keep practicing and always work on being healthy". Oo has a role model himself who he looks up to, Cristiano Ronaldo, a forward for Real Madrid. When asked if he ever has had a time where he felt as great as Cristiano Ronaldo, he says, "Yeah I actually do, I actually remember one game where I scored two goals, it's an amazing feeling.” Oo is excited about his last season and has many goals he wants to reach for his last season with the SMSA Tigers Boys Soccer.
